Swimming in the icy Solent

April 7, 2005

I did it!
Solent
When I was living in False Bay, South Africa, I fell in love with the sea and went for a swim every day. I was really worried that I wouldn’t be able to do that in the UK – but yesterday I went for a swim in the Solent, the sound between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.

Solent

The air temperature was 12 degrees celsius and it was windy – don’t even ask about the water! And with its pebbles, it’s not quite as glorious as Danger Beach. But I proved that it is possible to swim in the sea in the UK.

Afterwards, a fine pint of stout helped put things in perspective….

Dude, I so knew you’d hit England like a bomb. I can only imagine how the english hearts must have quivered with envy seeing some tanned madman – heedless of the freezing sea and weather – rush into the waters. It’s almost illegal for locals to do that kind of stuff. If they do, they’re dismissed as eccentric (ie: sad losers).
