Working at the World’s End

May 16, 2005

World's End 2
I have been a really bad blogger, and haven’t posted anything for weeks. It’s because I am short of money and can’t afford to go to internet cafes much, and I am not settled enough to get my own broadband yet.
So: I still love Edinburgh, but no reality is starting to bite a little. The ‘fortune’ I brought over from South Africa has dwindled, and I have got myself a job: in a pub on the Royal Mile called The World’s End. It’s a lovely pub in a lovely location, but it means that my days are spent pulling pints rather than exploring, and I make barely enough for rent.
I have also worked at the races in Ayr and Perth, and recently at a very hotly contested fitba’ match between Hibs and Aberdeen (Hibs lost, dashing their hopes of going to Europe). I pulled pints for thirsty Scots at both events.
So while the work is interesting, I wish I had some more monhey and time to do some of the other things this city has to offer, like the world famous ghost tours (it’s the most haunted city in the world) and maybe a trip to the highlands. But I am sure it will all work out: beats London!

you’re working at a pub called The World’s End? hmmm, The World’s End is a mysterious inn / pub featured in my favourite series of books: Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. have you read them? funny that. Well, looks like you and i are both in the business of quenching people’s thirst. well, it’s cash, opportunity to meet some interesting characters and beats handing out flyers, don’ it? glad to know you guys are loving Edinburgh. good luck and enjoy!

I’d read The Sandman but forgotten the name of the pub. The one in Edinburgh is so called because it is built on the original boundary wall of the city. It’s a nice place, and queching thirst beats other kinds of work – but it’s still hard. So where are you working?

Great to catch up with you again Walton! Corked bay becoming somewot damp. What better place to work in than a pub, esp with your enthusiasm for beer and ale research! And you have the cheek to bitch!! Well well. It’s not work I could do v well, but just think of the workout you’re getting, your Eye of Horus(?)tattoo on your arm slowly expanding widthways till it becomes quite Chineeeeez eventually from slinging all that booze at the bonny lads & lasses. Love to Talitha – what is she doing?

You’re clearly not a soccer (sorry, football) fanatic, otherwise you’d know that Hibernian did qualify for Europe. The game you watched could have ensured they qualified then, but they managed it the next week.

I have a soft spot for Hibernian, as when I was in Europe, they were playing in one of the two games I watched (a 1992 European tie versus Anderlecht, in Belgium – they drew that one 1-1, and that really did dash their hopes of going further. God, I have a memory for useless things).

I could barely understand most of their songs, but one stuck in my mind. Imagine a thick Edinburgh accent: ‘We are Hibernian, fook off Midlothian’ (that’s Hearts of Midlothian, their dreaded Edinburgh rivals).

Actually, I like Hibs too, they are the ‘fooking team that never wins’ in Trainspotting. Also they’re irish and underdogs rather than orange bastardfs, so I am inclined to like them. When I was at the match and they lost to Aberdeen (after beating Celtic), all their fans were gutted, thinking it was all over. But they did qualify in the end. Did you see the Liverpool/AC Milan match? Now that was footy drama. I almost cared what happened.

I saw the game. I missed the first two Liverpool goals (which was the real drama) when Dorje decided to join in the fun. But it ranks up there with the games of all time – and I did care about the result.
