Viva Zapata!
There seems to be a thriving political scene in Enbra. I have discovered a cool cafe called the Forest, where everyone works for free and any money raised goes for community projects. It’s a bit of a political meeting place, or just a relaxed commune environment to escape from Babylon for a few minutes.
There is an autonomous centre somewhere around (I haven’t found it yet), and I went to an anarchist quiz show put on by schnews at Holyrood Tavern – attended by everyone from crusty punks to guys in suits (don’t know who they were….)
And I, ahem, won.
We have a massive day of action coming up in July, with the G8 meeting happening at Gleneagles, just to the north. There’ll be a massive ‘Make poverty history’ march, with a chain of people in white surrounding the city, as well as a somewhat more spiky ‘make capitalism history’ demo. There is also Bob Geldof’s Live Aid resurrected at Murrayfield stadium, and the Borders and Lothian Police (that’s the Filth to you) jumping up and down in panic at Sir Bob’s claims that a million people will descend on staid old Enbra.
I am holding back, not getting involved in any organising just yet – i want to get a sense of what the scene is like before I get caught up in any bad craziness.
But I’ll be at the demo, with my camera, so expect some reporting form the front lines – that’s if I can book an internet slot at the public library!

Congrats! I miss some of the savvy political dialogue in England. Meanwhile large groups of Zuma supporters in KZN are toy-toying their arses off in support of corruption – it’s all a bit predictable, although the crazed shenanigans of the ANC Youth League do offer some entertainment (if you can avoid the looming sense of despair).
