Scottish weather
June 24, 2005
I checked the weather report today. It’s mid-summer here in Scotland,
and mid-winter in Cape Town, yet it it warmer (24 degrees) in Cape Town than Edinburgh (19). God, I could do with a nice warm Cape winter and swim in the sea. Don’t know how I’m going to cope with the snell winds that blaw here in January….

If it makes you feel any better, it’s a freezing 15 degrees in Cape Town, and a fine 20 degrees in Edinburgh today.
But you seem to have already caught the British disease of complaining about the weather.
I suggest a bracing commune with the elements. A night outside appreciating the unique Scottish summer nature spirits should soon set you straight.

Actually, I should stop bitching, because the one thing that is amazing is that there is no night! There are about 20 hours of day light in midsummer, so you’re still watching the sunset at 11, then you have a few hours of twilight, and then sunrise. The light is really quite eerie, especially since often days are overcast, so light levels seems to stay the same for most of the 24 hour period.

If I were British I’d complain about the weather too. And everything else. Last Friday was quite warm here in Cape Town. So was yesterday. So is today, in fact. And when it gets cold we just hotfoot it to one of the warm baths two or three hours drive from Cape Town where we can languish in hot pools all weekend and rejuvenate with all the stunning nature around us. I’ve seen Scottish summer, and its nature spirits can go fuck themselves. Okay Scotland is beautiful, granted, I’m just trying to convice Walton to come back to Cape Town for the summer. Who else am I going to explore the Peninsula’s underwater reefs with?

It’s not going to take much convincing, bru. I am there. As long as I have enough money to get out there.
